DEAR PRESIDENT OBAMA,
As a person of faith committed to helping those in poverty, I request that you re-state your commitment to cut domestic poverty in half by 2020. The recently released 2009 Census Bureau statistics on poverty are heart-breaking: Four million people in our nation were added to those already living below the poverty line. One in every seven people in the U.S. live in poverty and one in every five children in our nation live below the poverty line. We now have the highest rate of poverty in the past 15 years.
Scripture calls for us to care for “the least of these”—those living in poverty. I believe you should work with Congress to protect those programs that provide a safety net for the most vulnerable among us and to pass effective legislation to create jobs. The well-being of millions of people and our nation is at stake. Your re-commitment to drastically reducing poverty in the U.S. will elevate the fight against poverty to the high priority it deserves and requires.
