FIGHTING POVERTY WITH FAITH 2010 OCTOBER MOBILIZATION

The National Council of Churches-USA (NCC), along with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs and Catholic Charities USA are working together to cut domestic poverty in half between 2010-2020 through the Fighting Poverty with Faith coaltion.

Click Here to read the endorsement letter for the October 2010 mobilization.

During October, the NCC is encouraging you and your church to make it clear that people of faith believe it is both possible and necessary to cut domestic poverty in half between now and 2020. There is no such thing as a “small” contribution. Every bit of effort helps.

NCC has put together a few suggestions for contributions you can make. Below, you will find resources to aid in your church’s fight against poverty. Click on the links below for ideas. You can also check out our advocacy toolkit. Let us know if you're planning something at povertyinfo@nccendpoverty.org --- We'll support you and tell your story.

ACTION IDEAS

Join us October 5 at 3:00pm eastern for a kick-off conference call at 1-888-690-8774. NCC President Rev. Peg Chemberlin will open with a prayer, and there will be time for Q & A with director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighbhorhood Partnerships Joshua DuBois.

FAST: Observe a Poverty Fast   Adult Version           Youth Version

One of the most effective ways to understand the perils of poverty is to experience, even for a short time, what living in poverty is like. A way to achieve this is to observe a fast. Click on "Adult Version " or "Youth Version " for fast-planning guidelines. During the fast, you may wish to use our poverty resources for education, Bible study, and worship.

PRAY: Candlelight Vigil                 Adult Version          Youth Version

A candlelight vigil is an excellent way to gather people of faith in witness and prayer.  For detailed support on how to plan a candlelight vigil, click above.

ADVOCATE: Lead a letter offering  Adult Version    Youth Version

Organize a special time to write letters to your elected officials encouraging them to support poverty relief efforts. (Click here for general tips on organizing a letter offering.) You can use our sample letter as a model, or you may choose to write a letter using your own words. We have provided the letter in .docx format so you can adpat it to fit your local community's concerns. For unity in message, we encourage you to keep the "Fighting Poverty with Faith" and "NCC Poverty Initiative" headers on your letters.

SERVE: Schedule a Service Day

Many small organizations have been waging the fight against poverty for years. Oftentimes they rely on donations to fund their work, and sometimes those funds are slim. Pair with a local organization and see what they need: clothes, food, funds, or the most valuable gift of your time.

COMMUNICATE: Share this Website

Take 5 minutes to post a link to this web page on your organization or church's website, your own facebook page, or your twitter feed. (Maybe you don't have time to take one of the actions above, but someone else might.)

Let us know if you are going to take action. We would love to support you, and we want to share your stories. Email us at povertyinfo@nccendpoverty.org
