Background Faith Perspective | Take ActionResources Programs and Organizations

Background
There are 9 million uninsured children in America – that's one in nine. Every 39 seconds, a child is born uninsured. More than 2,200 children are born uninsured every day. Health care costs for working families continue to rise, making it difficult to afford insurance or access timely care. As economic uncertainty grows, we must protect those living on the economic margins, particularly children. For more information click here.

Faith Perspective

Jesus cared about people being healthy in mind, body and spirit. Throughout the Bible, healing stories are witness to God’s hope for our health and wholeness. Jesus sent his followers out to heal the sick. When some disciples tried to keep the children away, Jesus told them, “Let the children come to me and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.” (Mark 10:14)

Take Action!

  • Many uninsured children are eligible for Medicaid or SCHIP; their parents may not realize it. If your child is uninsured, call toll-free 1(877) KIDS-NOW to find out about low-cost and free health care coverage.
  • Publish an article about SCHIP in your newsletter. You can also post a copy on your bulletin boards for visitors and members to see.
  • Distribute a church bulletin insert about SCHIP. In addition, distribute extra copies wherever your church displays pamphlets, fliers and other useful information. If your church has a program or ministry that serves low-income families, such as a food pantry or Head Start program, please share this information with the program’s participants. [Download Sample Bulletin Insert PDF]
  • Ask the school or child-care program your child attends, or other local schools, to send home information about Medicaid and SCHIP.
