federal budget
Background | Faith Perspective | Take Action | Resources | Programs and Organizations
The number of Americans in poverty climbed by 816,000 in 2007 according to the Census Bureau. The recession has led to higher unemployment in every state across the nation. Since the recession began, employers have laid off 4.4 million workers and a record 12.5 million workers are now unemployed. If the increase in poverty relative to the increase in unemployment is within the range of the last three recessions, the number of poor Americans will rise by 7.5-10.3 million, the number of poor children will rise by 2.6-3.3 million and the number of children in deep poverty will rise by 1.5-2.0 million.
