Faith Advocates for Jobs will sponsor a national interfaith service to honor the life and legacy
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to rededicate ourselves to the struggle for worker justice,
which he championed up to his death.
Rev. Dr. James Forbes, above, senior pastor emeritus of Riverside Church in New York City, will deliver the sermon. He will be joined on the pulpit by unemployed workers, national coordinator of Faith Advocates for Jobs Rev. Paul Sherry, and Shiloh Baptist Church pastor Dr. Wallace Smith.
When: January 16, 2012, 3:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.
Where: Shiloh Baptist Church
1500 Ninth Street, NW
Washington, D.C.
Closest Metro stop: Shaw on the Yellow Line. The church is on 9th St. NW between P and Q.
Music will be provided by the famed Shiloh Baptist Church Choir directed by Thomas Tyler. The service also will feature Buddhist drummers and a litany from an array of Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Unitarian Universalist and other interfaith leaders. A goodwill offering will be taken during the service.
As Dr. King said: “Our emphasis must turn…to putting people to work...When they are placed in this position, they can then examine how to use their creative energies for the social good.”
Faith Advocates for Jobs is a campaign initiated by Interfaith Worker Justice (www.iwj.org) and 40 other organizations to address the severe suffering endured by millions of unemployed workers. For more information, visit www.faithadvocatesforjobs.wordpress.com.
