Poverty Initiative
The goal of the Poverty Initiative is to empower and mobilize the faith community to lend its powerful moral and public voice to the ongoing and urgent debate around poverty.

Churches have been powerful voices for generations on a range of defining social justice issues, most importantly the need to address poverty. Central to any Christian message is the call to care for the "least of these"--to love and care for our neighbors. With more people both in the United States and globally living on the economic margins, people of faith are drawing more deeply upon that rich tradition of social justice engagement to speak out on the need to address the range of poverty issues, and create community practices and national policies that lift people from a life of poverty.

Justice and Advocacy Commission
The Justice and Advocacy Commission is one of the five ecumenical commissions of the National Council of Churches. It is composed of representatives nominated by the member communions of the NCC, and serves as a forum and clearinghouse for collaborative efforts to be faithful in our day to the ancient prophet's call for all people of faith to "do justice and love mercy" (Micah 6:8), and the timeless mandate of Jesus to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31), with the promise "that all may have life, and have it abundantly" (John 10:10).

Through the Commission, churches and their agencies, regional councils of churches and related organizations are invited to work together to pursue justice in today's complex society -- addressing poverty, peacemaking, racial and gender justice, environmental stewardship -- and to respond with a common voice to issues of moral crisis as they arise. National Council of Churches
Since its founding in 1950, the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA has been the leading force for ecumenical cooperation among Christians in the United States. The NCC's member faith groups — from a wide spectrum of Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox, Evangelical, historic African American and Living Peace churches — include 45 million persons in more than 100,000 local congregations in communities across the nation.
